Service Credit
Besides your regularly accrued service credit as a CalPERS member, you may be eligible to purchase/convert additional service credit before you retire:
Service Prior to Membership (SPM)
If you worked for the City prior to becoming a CalPERS member, you may be eligible to purchase service credit for the time you were employed. We recommend you purchase your service credit early in your career, as the longer you wait, the more it will cost to purchase.
To process your SPM request:
- To request online, log in to myCalPERS. Go to the Retirement tab, select Service Credit Purchase followed by the Search for Purchase Options button. Here, you will be prompted to answer a series of questions to help determine which service credit types you may be eligible to purchase. You will also be asked to provide employment and service information for the requested period. Once all required information has been completed, you can view the estimated cost for any available purchase options and submit your request for review.
- Contact HR and inform them of your intent to purchase service credit. You will be asked to assist HR in tracking your hours by completing the Service Credit Spreadsheet for the time you wish to purchase.
- Once HR has certified your time with PERS, cost details will be available in myCalPERS for your review within 60 days.
Sick Leave Conversion to Service Credit
Depending on the cash-out options provisioned in your bargaining unit's MOU, you may have the option of converting a percentage of your unused sick leave hours into service credit. Sick leave service credit does not change your age at retirement or your effective retirement date. It simply increases the amount of service credit used in determining your retirement benefit. If you would like to convert your hours, you must contact payroll before your scheduled retirement date.
- 2000 hours of sick leave equals one year of service credit.
- To find out how much service credit your sick leave will provide, take your sick leave hours and divide it by 2000.
- To find out how many sick hours you have in your bank, check your most recent paystub via Munis ESS.
