Update Your Benefits When Life Changes
What is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE)?
A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is a major life change that may allow you to make changes to your benefit elections outside of the annual Open Enrollment period. Common QLEs include getting married, having a baby, losing other coverage, or a dependent becoming eligible (or ineligible) for benefits.
What Changes Can You Make During a QLE?
If your life event qualifies as a QLE, you may be eligible to make changes to a variety of benefit elections, including:
-
Medical, Dental, and Vision Plans
Enroll in coverage, change your plan or provider, or add/remove dependents. -
Life Insurance
Enroll, terminate, increase or decrease your current coverage (some changes may require Evidence of Insurability). -
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) & Dependent Care Accounts (DCA)
Enroll, terminate, or adjust your annual election amount based on your new needs. -
Supplemental Benefits
Enroll in, terminate, or adjust supplemental benefits offered through American Fidelity.
All change requests must be directly related to your qualifying event and submitted within the 30-day deadline.
Why Timing Matters
If you experience a Qualifying Life Event, contact HR and submit the applicable QLE form as soon as possible—even if you haven’t gathered all the required supporting documentation yet. HR will guide you through the process, but your request must be received within 30 days of the event date to be considered timely and to make changes to your benefits. Missing this deadline may mean you have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period to make changes.
Take Action Early
Whenever possible, contact HR before the life event occurs to understand your options and the required documentation. For example, if you're planning to get married, expecting a child, or losing other coverage, reaching out in advance helps avoid delays or missed deadlines.
What You Need to Know:
-
Proof is required for most QLEs (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate, loss of coverage letter).
-
Changes must be consistent with the event
-
Each event has a strict 30-day window to request changes
-
If you're unsure whether your situation qualifies, HR is here to help.
