    Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) provides up to 12 workweeks of unpaid job protected leave that may be taken all at once or intermittently as the medical condition requires within a 12-month period. 

    Employees are eligible for FMLA/CFRA leave if they have been employed by the City for at least 12 months and have worked at least 1,250 hours during the preceding 12 months.  Leave may be taken for one or more of the following reasons:

    • For the birth of a child of an employee, and to care for a newborn
    • The placement of a child for adoption or foster care
    • A serious health condition of the employee that makes the employee unable to perform functions of his/her position
    • To care for a parent, child, or spouse who has a serious health condition
    • (CFRA only) Because you are needed for your grandparent, grandchild, sibling, or domestic partner due to their serious health condition.
